Employers asking for MySpace AccountsThat' s right, in the news rather recently, and I heard this on the radio,....bosses asking "I need your myspace address" to further research what you social life is like. So ladies and gents, if you have taken apart in debachery and partial nudity, might get rid of that MySpace account or perhaps put up a "bogus" account for your employers. MySpace isn't just for social lives. I know more than a few professionals who use them for free advertising and communication. Mostly musicians and teachers... Well, yeah, but the point they are trying to come across is that, after being a college graduate, you could be turned down or fired from a job because your boss saw those photos of you doing body shots at Daytona Beach Springbreak. LOL. Here' s a sample: 75% of employers say that the use social networking sites as part oftheir background checks, and as a result, 35% of qualified candidateshave been rejected because of the racey or other inappropriate materialon these sites. Who conducted a presentation at OnRec, strongly advises employers not to use these sites for making employment decisions. Employers are screening applicants for poor judgement by checking what apply their real name to online? Not that I don' t agree that IHR should be burned at the stake for most of what they do, but what did you expect? That sort of thing is fine for Musicians, any PR is good PR for them. I don' t know about teachers. "Hello my name is Ms. Jones, I' m about 30, blond, hot and like to make it with 15 year old boys." I don' t think you need to advertise that sort of thing, word spreads. No, Shopper, I mean anyone who is self-employed, like a musician or someone who teaches classes or lessons in something. I can' t tell you how many musicians have MySpace sites because they can put recordings of their music out there. And for some of them, it' s rather unfortunate because they don' t play all that well. On the other hand, how the hell does the employer know whose site that is? Lots of people have the same name or use the same name. Many do not even use their real name on MySpace.
Employers are ASKING to put your screen name from MySpace on the application for employment! And if you' re dumb enough to answer that question and you' re dumb enough to have a MySpace account or you' re dumb enough to have it in your real name or to access it from work where they can check up on you and you' re dumb enough to have inappropriate things on that account, you deserve what you get. First of all, I' m not telling them I have a MySpace account, but I never really heard of such a thing, until I heard it on the radio. Perhaps this is the right-wing version of the ' nanny state' they complain about the left trying to implement. | |
