Career Tips

negotiate work schedule

A job ads indicated that telecommuting may be granted to qualificed candidates.  When I was interviewed, the hiring manager asked me if I will be able to work out of its local office. I really want to telecommute, but not sure if I can negotiate this once they give me the offer. Telecommuting or flexible hour is very important to me, if the work hours are too strict, I may not consider this position. What should I do? How do I negtiate with the employer?

What is the job?

What is the "qualified candidates" statement?

Have you had the discussion?  Are there reasons why they need you in the office at certain hours or days?

Since this is a deal breaker for you, you need to be up front in what you want in terms of hours and location from the employer.  Neog. this after the offer will be more difficult because assumptions have probably been made as to your hours and work location.   If you change those assumptions you are putting yourself in a negative light at the beginning.   I would not expect to telecommute within the first month of employment, the employer doesn't know you, your work habits or ethics - nor will you know the busines, their schedules or expectations.  Once the learning curve is met then both sides can work together.
