Career Tips

Skeletons in closet

My resume shows strong skills and experience but the credit check scares me.  Am I stagnant in my career because my credit is in chaos right now?  Should I bring this up during an interview?  How do I handle this?

You certainly do not want to reference your ' credit chaos' on your resume. Are you considering a position which would involve handling money? If so, talking to the interviewer, giving as little information as possibly while remaining honest may help you. If you lie and a credit check reveals your credit history (which it can) it will look as if you were not being honest. So many companies are running pretty intensive background searches, it really
is important to be upfront with an interviewer, and in a face-to-face discussion, the negative credit history may
not even be an issue.

The position I am looking for will need someone with "entrepreneurial" qualities.  I am qualified for sales or  management.  If it is sales I will be traveling and would probably be issued a company credit card.  If management it would be along the lines of a Account Manager for companies like Kraft or Campbell' s Soup where budgets come in to play.  There probably will not be any direct handling of cash but I' d be responsible in many ways for company money.

I am confident there is a job out there where I can achieve my goals (see my profile).  I just do not want to lose a good one because I became a deer in headlights when the issue came up.  I prefer to go through the learning curve on this issue here, in this format.

One plan of action might be to go after a position that doesn' t handle money and then after a year or two transfer to one that does.

I know  of others who have done that for similar reasons.  A paycheck can sure help with rebuilding your credit.
