I love my job... I really doMaybe if I keep telling myself that I love my job one day I'll actually mean it. I work at a grocery store I am a cashier, customer service desk, and file maintenance person. I recently decided that I wanted to go back to school. I am currently attending a community college. I told my boss that I have class on these days and at these times and I wrote in down in my BIG BUBBLY HAND WRITING so she would remember... She doesn't I continually have to tell her that I have class and that I can't work. I think that my boss is nuts she treats everyone like they are dumb and everyone is beneath her and she is number one. She is constantly denying people days off and vacation time. And we get a personal holiday for our birthdays and she will not let me have the day off. She says I need to be there because I am an asset to the store. Yeah okay!!!! I am a pawn for you to play with. Also isn't is against the law to deny people breaks and lunches and make them work for ten hours straight? Despite the screen name I am not a super hero! Thanks I needed to vent. suprgrl You need to contact the Wage & Hour Board in your city/county. Federal Law requires at least a half hour break for every six hours worked. You should also be paid time and a half for every hour you work past 40 hours per week or 80 hours in a two week period. For example, if you earn $8 an hour your overtime rate is $12 an hour. Overtime is a requirment for hourly workers. However, breaks ARE NOT guaranteed or required. Breaks grew out of union contracts, but the Federal government has never required them. Your state might, so it's important to check. You are entitled to any holidays and days off that are specified in the employee handbook. You should call the company HR department and request a copy if one wasn't provided when you were hired. I'm not an expert in labor law but a relative ran up against a similar situation and I'm just sharing what we learned. Unfortunately, too many companies and bosses try to cheat employees out of overtime and time off. Learn your rights and stand up for yourself. Good luck. P.S. Take a page out of a calendar, mark you school dates on it and put it in a place she's bound to notice.
