Career Tips

I did good today.

I came across an advertisement that asked three questions for every applicant that wanted to apply.

Please answer the following as to what you would do if hired:
1)what programs would you setup to control inventory and mailing lists?
2)have you ever designed a website before? if so what ones?
3)what hours would you be interested in working and why?

My response was :

In response to your three questions, although I'm not familiar with other types of software like for business, being mainly a creative hardware installation and maintenance type, I am familiar with a website ( even though I wasn't, it was just a random internet search I did )  called Inventory Solutions, www.inventorysolutionsonline.net which has various products for both inventory and mailing lists.

I do have experience designing my own website having had a previous DSL account with Verizon which was only a simple set of three pages posting pictures and video content. The http address was once called http://mysite.verizon.net/vze1xlq4r which no longer exists.

As far as hours go, the set hours you state 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM is fine, however if it is flexible, I would like to shift it by two hours comming in at 10AM and leaving at 6PM

What do you  think, this time I did good, eh?

No insults, no hurls of fire and brimestone hate rhetorical criticism.

My orignal intent before answering was to just write the same thing I normally write not even bothering to answer the questions posed - I came across your advertisement and would like to apply if it remains available, attached are both my resume' and cover letter, if not, thank you for reading this message.

This time I honestly engaged.

You admitted that you do not have the experience in business software which they probably require and you're just a creative type when it comes to installation and maintenance - whatever the heck that means.  You did an Internet search and found a Web Site which anyone could have found.  You could not tell them that you're familar with inventory software from using these packages at former jobs.  Therefore - you were not honest!  You lied and insulted their intelligence!

I do have experience designing my own website having had a previous DSL account with Verizon which was only a simple set of three pages posting pictures and video content. The http address was once called http://mysite.verizon.net/vze1xlq4r which no longer exists.

Anyone with minimal computer literacy can set up an account with Sites like Yahoo, Verizon, MySpace, YouTube and MSN.  I created two MSN Sites which I have maintained for years.  These Communities are easy to create and build upon for virtually all computer literate people.  They lay out the foundation!  They do not constitute evidence that you can create your own Website from scratch.  You are not a Website or graphic designer by any stretch of the imagaination and neither am I.  Therefore, you were not honest when answering this question either.

As far as hours go, the set hours you state 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM is fine, however if it is flexible, I would like to shift it by two hours comming in at 10AM and leaving at 6PM

Finally - you came up with a satisfactory answer.  Stating the hours you would like to work if given a choice is always a good idea!

Not really but anything is better than that infamous cover letter!

Perhaps in your own way, you are starting to make some improvements!

No insults, no hurls of fire and brimestone hate rhetorical criticism.

You asked for input again and I am the first person to give it.  It's your choice how you interpret it!  If you do not want honest responses or any responses, don't start these Threads!

I guess you are admitting that you have been dishonest previously.  That is a good first step but you have much room for improvement.

Next time you may do even better!

This is positive constructive criticism.  Your answers are fine except for the first question.  You did not answer the question posed.  The question asks what programs you would set up to control inventory and mailing lists.  They are not asking if you know the programs, just asking what programs you would use.  You gave them an answer that clearly says you don't know and then gave them a website for them to figure the solution  themselves.  They are asking you for a solution.

This would have been a more appropriate way to answer the question:  "I would use such and such a programs to help you control inventory and mailing lists and this is why."

Let us know if they respond and what they have to say.

You're absolutely right, I mention the website that has the product, therefore if the person reading my e-mail message wasn't a total moron, he or she would figure out this product, or one like it is what I would use.

Jesus Christ, what's so difficult to understand about that?

I'd say that's answering the question exactly as it's posed.

Yeah well if they wanted a Bill Gates, they should have asked for one.

The advertisement seemed pretty simple and loose to me, that's why I bothered to apply at all.

I think you over-did it with your so-called criticism.

( just an opinion, don't bite my head off )

In response to your three questions, although I'm not familiar with other types of software like for business, being mainly a creative hardware installation and maintenance type, I am familiar with a website ( even though I wasn't, it was just a random internet search I did )  called Inventory Solutions, www.inventorysolutionsonline.net which has various products for both inventory and mailing lists.

No, xttwo, I am correct.  You did not answer the question.  You didn't tell them a product - you gave them a website and various products to look at.

I would bet that even someone with a low IQ could figure out the answer to such a simple question the asked.  What product?  Give them a specific product and then give them a reason why you chose it.

Be straight out and answer a question directly and forcefully instead of beating around the bush by giving them a website to look through.  That tells them you are unsure of yourself and don't know what you are talking about.

BTW, if you thought your answers were so good, did they contact you?

Of course they didn't.

Did you forget who you're talking to?

Jesus, girlie.   Get with the program.

And by the way, not specifically naming a product  but naming a website based on a websearch means I'll keep my options open for anything and everything :  cost efficient.

But I suspect only intelligent people can figure that out.   ( like me of course )

Comprehension, xttwo, comprehension.  Where is yours?

The employer did not ask for options. The employer asked for a program recommendation from you and you didn't give him one.    You come across as being unsure of yourself and lacking in self confidence in your response.  Intelligent people know to give a direct answer when they are asked a direct question.  It's common sense.

You want to know what common sense is?

Common sense is learning when not to be rediculous.

I found that website based on a simple web search which Bruno says anyone should be able to do.

Unfortunately not everyone can, I could have left it blank and gave a flimsy answer : I would use Quickbooks, Quicken, or develop my own inventory and mailing list system uitilizing whatever generic program you may have running on your computer systems. ( Windows, Linux )

I didn't do that, ( hip, hip hooray for me ) I actually put some effort and elbow grease by searching the net high and low for a grand total of two seconds and picked out a site that had specifically what the question was asking for.

- PS. You think Lola ( LolaRN ) hasn't responded because of that lowball response I gave about her flimsy misdiagnosis of me?

Haven't seen any response from her lately, wonder where she is.
