AUTISM 1 IN 150 CHILDRENEver heard of Jenny MCCarthy? She has an autistic child. Some researchers say that Autism is caused by the vaccines give all children. At least, she is rich enough to have insurance. Jenny McCarthy's JourneyActress's New Book 'Louder Than Words' Offers 'a Little Hope' to Parents of Autistic Children![]() Actress Jenny McCarthy opens up about her son Evan's autism in her new book. From 20/20 Jenny McCarthy is actor Jim Carey's girlfriend. I wonder what they called Autism prior to 1980s before Autism became more known?
They probably called it mental retardation.
DP, I went to elementary school in the 60s and 70s. We had this one kid who was kind of 'strange'. He didn't talk too much BUT he loved drawing. At age 9 he was drawing Super Heroes like Superman, Spiderman, Batman, the Incredible Hulk and he drew the teacher so life like . . . all the way down to the wrinkles on her face! I remember the teacher was so amazed at this kid's ability. He wasn't retarded nor was he slow. Just a bit odd that is all. But as I look back on it, the only thing he did very well was drawing, art and painting. In high school, he was a phenom. He drew stampeding bisons as they were running towards you and you would swear it was so life like . . . almost 3D. But his drawings of automobiles was the best. He could draw a car and even had the reflections in the car's paint look like it was a photograph! He painted the school's mascot in the gymnasium without using grids. That painting was at least 6' by 5'! Amazing!!
This forum is for venting about work. Did you not get the memo? I wish to ask. How well did this child communicate with others? Was he/she a loner? What you describe sounds like he had a case of Asperger's Syndrome. dp
DP, I think that is what they call it now. But isn't that a form of Autism? I know he was not like Rainman (Tom Cruise/Dustin Hoffman movie). Just acted like a 'nerd'. I do not remember the subjects he was good at. I only remember he was good in certain subjects like Art.
The way I learned the situation is Asperger's is in the "spectrum" of Autism. However, their are vast differences. Autistic children and people cannot get along on their own. They may be talented in one area, but are still not functionable. Aspies tend to be "loners", but do get along pretty well. Aspies are involved only in themselves and are implacable when it comes to a few activities. They can stay on a chemistry problem day and night without sleeping or eating. Also, as a result, they are never very good at social interactions with others. (Note: My doctor says I am an aspie-however, I don't quite agree.) Disability Panther, there's a site I stumbled across the other day, and it shows what very well could be the real reason there is so much autism/Asperger's, etc. today. It's a very lenghty document, but it's worth reading. Here's the addy: http://soyonlineservice.co.nz There's the other one, www.food.consumercide.com/soy_compl.html . Seriously, it's a real shocker.
Thanks. I will look the sites up. | |
