THE DISABLED SHOULD FIGHT! AN EXAMPLE..I present you with an example of how the disabled should fight; especially those who are unlucky enough to be within the mental death system. I was placed by my disability housing agency into a small(cottage type) house. I met the landlady(really land slum lord) at my housing agency. I did not receive a copy of the lease. So, I did not know what was in the lease. Usually, they show me my residence before I sign a lease: but this time they did not have the decency to show me my future habitat. Now, repairs. I was told that the lawn would be kept up and the general yard.(They left me with half a rake.) Alas! They never did any yard maintenance and the grass is no longer grass: it is five foot weeds! The gutters are all clogged up leaving me open for leaks. The sinks in both the kitchen and bathroom are leaking; one like a sieve. When I go to take a shower, the hot and cold handles come off in my hands. The thermostat is hanging from the wall.(Not screwed in.) There are no face plates to some electrical outlets and can't plug appliances in for fear of electrocution. The basement doors(the tornado type metal doors) are locked so if I have to turn off the voltage through the breakers or fuses....I can't. If there is a fire, I could burn to death because the fireman must hatchet the locked metal doors! Etc. Etc. Now, when I called the real estate landlord(she owns her own real estate) she says the mess is my disability housing agency's problem. Of course, I then went to my housing agency and they said go back to my land lady slum lord. Enough! I became sick and tired! Passing the ole'buck! I went to mental health lawyers(they exist all over the country) and presented them with photos of the messes. Result: a woman from the housing agency came within an hour and said everything will be fixed up. They had better be, or I will sue! So, if you are involed with any agency within the mental death system...don't just sit on your haunches!...get up and go get help absolutely FREE! Finally, there is a problem in this country concerning placing aged, infirm, disabled, veterans etc. in places that are just run down slums owned by people who are just in it for profit. People who place the disabled and other infirm people in rat holes..... deserve to be jailed and live in their own rat holes for life! DisabilityPanther I AGREE COMPLETELY!

Sure they do, Emil! Some people just do not bother to respond to messages like yours. Your solution that these slum lords should be forced to live in the kind of horrendous conditions that you describe is a marvelous idea. They should also spend time in prison if they refuse to clean up their act. They're endangering the lives of their tenants. This is so damn demeaning and unnecessary! I cannot relate, so I cannot even imagine what it must be like! Most of them live rather well in their nice apartments or houses. I do not know how these scumbags sleep at night or look in the mirror. Shame on them!
Bunzo I don't know. The usual, committed trolls did not bother to respond. Well, if the people on this board attain a disability or just grow old and frail.... I wonder if they think they can end up in a "spider hole", like the one they caught Saddam Hussein in. St. John the Baptist. St. John, Let us know how this situation plays itself out. Bunzo DP, May I make a suggestion? When you get no relief from the property owner, you may want to check with the local building and health departments. (Yes, you have already told me that those departments are not willing to help you but you make your report to them anyway.) They have more leverage to force the owner to clean up the property or do maintenance than you do. You can go so far, in my local area, as to place your rents in escrow with the courts and no rent is received by the owner until the maintenance work is done. You are also free from being evicted for non-payment as long as your rent is paid to the court in a timely manner. The owner gets paid only after the property is inspected and the issues have been resolved. While I do not know the law in your area, there may be similar remedies available to you. Perhaps it might be worth looking into. I am sorry. I guess I did not state the results. Or maybe I did. I went to a free mental health lawyer and she called my housing agency and the latter sent a representative to my house. I greeted her with my half a rake they left me. She toured the mess and wrote down what needs to be repaired. Then I said: "Next time do not even BOTHER to speak with me; speak with my attorney. (I don't want to say anything wrong.) Now, I am waiting for a plumber, electrician, landscaper and etc. If they do not follow up with the repairs, I will contact the local news....and they can take pictures of how the disabled and disenfranchised live. It is all too EASY to place helpless people in slums. One would never think Paris Hilton would live in a slum. St.John (Angry in his wilderness.) St John, Yes, I understand. However, if you get no repairs and no media chooses to cover this, I suggested that perhaps your municipality may have a usable remedy available to you. I hope they can get the work done quickly and that you will soon have satisfaction. No one should live in that kind of situation. Slum lords should not to be tolerated anywhere.
