NOW THAT WE ARE ON THE SUBJECT...I hear from the news that the suicide rate of returning Iraq veterans is at an all time high. How are we to obtain jobs with the government when the latter does not give the proper mental health care to its "heroes?" dp We are spending some $120 BILLION a year on this Iraqi War. So why not spend it on our injuried military personnel? We all know these soldiers will come back with mental illnesses. These young soldiers are seeing death every single minute they are in Iraq. We are seeing soliders coming back without arms, legs or without sight and we are not helping them. I feel we are obligated to pay for their healthcare for the rest of their lives because they gave a part of their body defending the United States. We go out of our way to help third world countries and illegal aliens yet we do not even take care of our own. Where is our priorities? I think the downing of America began with the "Morning in America" under Ronald Reagan. He began this compassionate conservative nonsense. Now, Bush took this plague to its ultra limits! Amen to that ! The thing that really gripes me is the money we are spending to rebuild over there !!! WHY ??? Our country wants everything out of these soldiers and then nothing in return but a kick in the butt - at least this generation of soldiers are being treated with respect unlike the Vietnam vets
I don't know about how much respect the troops are receiving. Please check out Iraq Veterans against the War. Those "unrespected" Vietnam troops had many similar organizations. dp It saddens me to see our veterans living in poverty. When our veterans need a nursing home, the government will not pay for it. Yet, a person who has not even paid into our system can get free nursing care as long as they are destitute! Why is that? This occurs with BOTH Democrats and Republicans. I have been lied to many times by Democratic senators and congress people than Replublican senators and congress people. I can never trust a Democrat any more. Ronald Reagan will always be a hero to me for helping me pay for college and graduate school. If not for Reagan, Iran would have pushed us around. Reagan stared them down when Carter could not even bring home the 444 hostages.
Yep - I am ashamed to admit that I really never paid that much attention to this area until 911 - and now I am proud to be associated with a group of bikers (we can drive cars too) that serve as escorts for fallen soldiers coming home, deploying units, units coming home, veterans that pass even at age 80 or whatever. We show up at the airport or where the family asks us to come and then we serve as an escort with flags flying high off of the bikes or cars and take them to where they need or want to go. In cases of funerals we will meet the plane and take the ride to the funeral home, then when the time is ready, pick up the escort to the church and then stand guard in front of the church then onto the burial place or back to the airport in the case of taking the casket back to be flown to be buried elsewhere. Its a real site to see - sometimes over 200 bikes with the flags flying high all in single file. The group was started as a result frm some nut cases coming to the funerals and planes to protest the war with a tiny group of bikers a few years ago in Kansas City and now over 100,000 members strong and growing all the time - I belonged to the group in Illinois and have been involved a few times when work schedule permitted, here in Arizona. We just served as an escort to a soldier coming home that had been injured but I wasnt able to be involved in that one. These men and women take their own time, vacation from work some of them, and drive many miles to do this as a way of respect. I know there are alot of vets from other wars involved in these rides and I cant help but feel apologetic when I see the Vietnam vets involved knowing how horribly they were treated when they came back home. Its not much but this is the one thing we can do and feel passionately about.

Because of his severe homophobia, and his belief that it was just a "gay cancer", he refused to even say the word AIDS publicly until 1987, after 40,000 people had already died of the disease. If the government had gotten involved sooner (the first cases were in 1981), it might not have become a worldwide pandemic. And my partner might not have died. He can be a hero to you if you want. To me, Reagan is a murderer, as sure as if he had put a gun to John's head and pulled the trigger. | |
