If you dont have experience in that ONE

.....thing....is it a waste of time to apply for it?

I had come across a few openings...they had about 6 things...

Applicant WILL have experience in

1. This
2. This
3. This
4. This
5. Oh oh.....

1-4, I had PLENTY of experience in

But number 5 (they even used an acronym) I had no experience.

So questions.

1. Is it a waste of time to try to apply for this position?
2. Will they hire you because well, 1 out of 5 ain't bad
3. They will hire you because everyone else knew nothing, while you knew 4 of the 5.?

I apply for something even if I only have five of the six. I figure most of the time I can learn the one skill I don't have. The only exception would be if the skill is something you need to have job experience in and it's required for the position. A while back a hr recruiter told me that often times they list a few things they'd like candidates to have, but sometimes can learn if they don't.
I agree with Princess. Go ahead and apply. What I've done in the past is address this in my cover letter: "I have X years experience doing 1,3 and 4, and have X years doing 2 and 6. While I do not have direct experience doing 5, I believe that my experience doing A and B is applicable. I have proven abilities to pick up new software (or whatever) skills quickly and easily, so I believe that I could quickly assimilate into the position." Or something like that.
Go for it, MonsterReader!  You have most of the skills.  More than one of my jobs was offered to me when I didn't have all of the criteria they asked for.  It happens quite often.
