How long is long enough

Does anyone have a theory about how long to give a "new job" before determining it is not a good fit, & will never be? I have been at this particular office for 6 months.  My last employer was a large orthopedic practice that lost a multi million dollar contract with a major medical center.  Buy outs were offered for a short time, & eventually, all but 3 employees were layed off.  I was one of a few who felt the "ship sinking", & took a buy out.  My position at the ortho practice was an appointment scheduling department supervisor.  I was there for 7 years, & it was a fabulous place to work, with a wonderful support staff.   Fast forward to the present, I am employed at a G.I. practice.  I really dislike this job very much.  I was hoping that it would improve with time,  but if anything, it appears to be getting worse.  At my 90 day evaluation, I was told I was doing very well & they were pleased with my performance, etc...so it has nothing to do with my ability.  There are reasons, none of which I'll list, because thats not the reason for this post.  I just want to know if I have given this job a long enough time to make a fair assessment.  Thank you.

You've probably given it enough time to make a fair assessment, but the bigger question is related to what do you do now.  Unless something spectacular comes along in the meantime, you'll be better off waiting it out for a year if you can.  Quietly look around and see if you can find something great, and if not, hang on until you do.
