Do employers Settle

I have seen this happen.

A position that someone applied for ONLY got it, basically, because NO one else wanted it (after they were offered it)

And when SHE was offered the position, only because she was the only one that wanted it, regardless of how much experience she had.

Is this just a fluke or not uncommon?
I wish that would happen to me. Not a good sign if she was the only one to apply.

I think it's more common that you think.  Sometimes if the employer doesn't want to go through the expense of looking outside for a new employee, they will post the position on the inside and if only one person applies, they will probably hire them.  I've seen it happen and I've heard it happen from others.

There are some jobs that just aren't very popular.  The other employees know the boss or the environment and won't touch it with a 10 foot pole.  It becomes hard to fill the position, so they'll put just about anyone in it.

A few years ago, my brother's boss was fired.  They ended up hiring a woman who had worked in the company for a few years and made her the supervisor.  She is not very good at her job, but she got the job because no one else wanted it.

Typically, most corporations go outside the company to find new candidates because it infuses 'new blood' into the company. That means the company will get fresh ideas and ways to do business. My former company from hell did that all the time even when they knew we had plenty of veteran employees who were more than qualified. I was passed up for five job promotions because of this arcane policy.

But what these backward companies do not know is that it will affect employee morale and production will drop. I have seen it first hand. When employees are not promoted it is only human to feel slighted and it will reflect on how that employee treats the customer or client. When I was passed for the fourth time, I will admit, I made sure the company lost about $10 million in sales. How? I never returned sales calls and let the bid fall through the cracks. I later learned this client went to our competitor and signed a contract for product.

Currently I have been employed with my current firm for two years and have been promoted three times without ever even asking for it. What this did was motivate me to prove that those promotions were warranted. This is why I enjoy putting in 10-12 hour days and working on my time to make sure we garner the most clients who book trade shows, conventions and other meeting rooms.

This message caught my eye today and thought to respond.

My example is the security job I had.

Low scale low pay jobs aren't the only types that no one wants. I bet a lot of jobs go unfilled because of location ( the employer / the applicant or both ), suburbs, rural areas, or jobs that on it's face just don't seem interesting to do.
