Switching CareersI am in my mid 30s and I currently work as a business IT architect. In college, I received an MIS degree where we did significant coding. My first two positions had me programming in COBOL, SAS and then eventually VB. I have a good understanding of DBs and SQL. I really enjoyed programming. I was good at it and I produced quality deliverables. But, I started down the path of projectprogram management and I moved away from programming. Recently, I have thought about trying to get back into a programming position (either freelance, contractor or full time). Does anyone have any thoughts on resources I could review or advice on which technology direction I should go in? A lot of people would love to have your problem.
Both of your fields are in good demand. So, I'd say unless there's something in terms of compensation that would draw you in a certain direction, go with what is going to make you most happy. The resource to review is your heart. Having tasted the waters in the other valley, you now can make a more informed choice of what is going to make you happy. As far as which technology direction to go, talk to your peers, see what is hot. What kinds of markets and products have you worked in so far? What interests you? Ruby on Rails is super hot, I hear, but maybe that is a smaller market. | |
