NEED CHANGE ADVISEHi, i have a Business Administration degree with a concentration in Management and also a degree in Mathematics. I currently work as a "brand planning manager." which means i'm basically a planner that works in the Operations division with marketing, sales, purchasing, engineering etc etc. this is my second job as a planner. my first job i stayed in for a year and a half and now this one for two years. i'm ready to move again. i'm trying to be honest with myself to realize maybe i shouldn't be in planning anymore. i have two good degrees and i am very good at whatever i set out to do. HOWEVER; i have NO idea what i want to set out to do. i'm job hunting and find myself searching for planning jobs bc that is all i know. i'm afraid that if i don't find something i like now...that i never will. i will be 30 next may. i am getting married next august and my fiance and i just bought a house. i am in a totally different stage of life now and want to make a "Smart" career move...rather than choose the job that pays the best. i want to be happy in my job and like what i do. do i need to just admit to myself that a job is a job and as long as it pays the bills i should appreciate it? ever wish that someone would look at your resume and be like, "i have the perfect job for you that you would love!" any words of wisdom?? See a career counselor. Your local community college should have one, or your alma mater or your phone book. They can do testing with you to determine what your skills, interests and abilities add up to, suggest related careers that you may not have considered, and help you to craft your resume to point out those strengths for the jobs you want.
How about something using your mathematics background? Do you enjoy the numbers work? If so, you might consider working in the insurance industry as an actuary or working with a state department of insurance, reviewing insurance rates submitted by insurance companies.
I don't have any advice but I can totally relate. I am changing careers at 32 and I feel like "if I don't do this now I will be forever stuck " but am really unsure what to do next. I know I have excellent sales skills but is that really what I want to pursue. I swing between feeling overwhelmed and unsure to being a little excited and optimistic. Sorry I couldn't help with career advice but at least you know you are not the only one Career change. It is a complex and non-linear process. Meaning, in most cases, your first tasks are really about gathering clues. Clues about what you are good at. And what you like to do. And, who would buy what you have to offer. You should spend some time capturing what you are naturally good at. What kinds of tasks. In what kinds of situations and environments. You should ask yourself about the business world. You have 2 degrees. You went into the business world. If it is still interesting to you, what parts? What were your goals when you started your degree? Who do you interact with where you think, I' d like that job! What kinds of things do you do as a planner? Extrapolate out and think about the skills and roles and outcomes you produce in non-planning language. Where else could you use these roles? Would a change of environment make a difference? Meaning, out of this kind of company and into a different kind? What kind of job is a close cousin to what you do now? A career change involves attracting a buyer, someone who wants to hire you. Often, there is something interesting one step removed from where you are now, and because there are parallels and overlap, that hiring manager is likely to "get" what you offer. A role that isn' t titled Planning, but rather has, for instance, 2-3 key areas of focus, one of which is planning. Start gathering and recording clues. If you have ideas and inklings, capture them and explore them. | |
