Will be laid off b4 he can retire

My concern is for my husband, in his mid-fifties, who I feel will probably be laid off before he can retire. The writing' s on the wall at his current company. They' re reducing staff- especially highly compensated staff of which he is- and decreasing his subordinates' work hours. These were all things that happened at the prior job he held for 10 years. All he wanted was an easy going job that he could retire from- and not have to get back out there in the job market in his late fifties and have a decent nest egg with a company. My easy answer is for him to start looking soon and go ahead and obtain the MS Office skills he' s been needing to get. However, my own job search hasn' t been all that fruitful yet and so I know it would be daunting for a 50 something to start all over.

Hmm. That' s unfortunate. You never know what might happen. However, based on what you have shared with us...

Getting active in the job search market is something he should start doing immediately. You need options. There are no guarantees with job search obviously, but he will at least be taking some control over his situation.

I don' t know what kind of impact he is making at work, but this is not a time to be seen as too expensive. What can he do to fire up the engines and contribute in a bigger way? Make more contributions. Be a positive force within the company. Mentor the junior people. Ensure that the attitude he brings to the office is a good one. This will do a couple of things: he just might win himself a place in a post layoff headcount. He might find some hidden energy and confidence, that will serve him well in job search, including perhaps some more examples of how he has contributed, and lastly, it might help him with references - current bosses seeing the extra effort he has been giving.

On the job search front, play the high probabilty channels. Meaning, be sure that his efforts include personally reaching out to his network and expanding that network and targeting specific companies around roles that he perform. What kind of buyer will appreciate his experience the most?

I hope that helps.
