Career Tips

Mortgage employees

I pretty much wanted to take a tally of how many Mortgage industry people are NOT getting jobs due to the media and daily mortgage bad news. I have adjusted my resume to reflect my Data Entry and Customer Service skills to find out when I show up to an interview I am trying to defend myself and decisions I made as an Underwriter because the interviewer has a vendetta against the industry. It is sad that a company will bring someone in for an interview and belittle them. At this point I am looking for a retail job because I know I will have a job for the holidays but what next? Am I alone? or are we all suffering ? Where do we go from here?

i feel your pain.  i am currently looking for something outside the mortgage industry BUT with my resume reflecting 8 years in mortgage: sales, processing, management I am finding it difficult getting interviews.

I want to change careers but i will be starting over at 33yrs old..scary.... i just don' t think the situation in the mortgage business is going to allow for much growth anytime soon.....

what types of jobs are you aiming for?

You are definitely not alone! After three weeks of job searching I came onto this board to seek advise on what I am doing wrong. I have spent my entire career , fifteen years, in the Real Estate/Mortgage Industry. Most recently as a mortgage processor. I left my job three weeks ago due to lack of work (I was paid on commission), I thought I would have no problem getting a job, but 37 resumes and only five interviews later I have not even a glimmer of hope. The interviews I am going on, I feel I am either over qualified for (mostly clerical) or do not pay anything close to what I was making even five years. I have even applied at Toys R Us for a seasonal job but have received no response. I fore saw this coming about a year ago so I have been taking classes to finish my Bachelors Degree in Business Administration/Accounting, I should be done in a year, but that is not doing me any good right now. If I do not find a job by the first of the year, I do not know what I am going to do. Fortunately I have not experienced any of the negative attitude about our former industry. Hopefully things will pick up after Thanksgiving, or perhaps we will have to wait till after the holidays all together. Companies should definitely be looking for the new year. Good Luck to you.smile

I have applied for Data entry, Customer Service, Sales, Retail Associate and Courier. I am all over the

place but no luck, at this point the money is not an issue, I just WANT TO WORK.

I feel your pain. I was in the mortgage industry for 7 years. My company is listed on the mortgage implode website and we weren' t even subprime! I loved my job, I went to a temp agency today and they said they couldn' t help me! I was there for 10 minutes and they we' re pushing me out the door! They said there is too many people like me who started in the mortgage industry all at the same time and all have been displaced around the same time.  All they had was administrative jobs that pay 35k/yr and below or high executive jobs that I do not qualify for. I dont have college experience and I' m 28 yrs old. This was my career. This is what I know. And now there is only like 10 lenders left (mostly A paper) with 500 sales reps fighting over the same accounts and territory. Its so depressing that I have to start all over again. I feel like all my networking, time and knowledge gained will go to waste! I knew the industry wouldn' t always be good so I put a bunch of money away, but I never thought it would be this BAD! I know loan officers that have not been paid in months and brokers downsizing, going out of business or being investigated.

I dont know what to do. I thought it would be easy to find a new job since my background includes underwriting, closing and sales. It seems all the job offers I' m receiving are in sales. I dont feel like working on 100% commission selling something I dont know about or dont believe in. Selling thinks like cable, water and even identity theft services.....  I' ve been unemployed for 3 months now. Luckily, my company was nice enough to give us a severance package, unlike most. But that money will soon run out.

I dont know if I' ll get back in the industry because I dont want this to happen to me again. (which sucks because I did love it) I know a guy who' s been thru 6 layoffs in his lifetime because of shutdowns and companies acquiring one another. As the saying goes...... "I wish I knew what I know now back then" I probably would have went to school and got a degree in something else. At least I would have had a back up plan. But instead.....I was living the good life making 100k yr.

You know we all (Underwriters, Loan Processors, Funders, Doc Drawers and Setup)have admin and customer service skills. What I don' t understand is why employers are not willing to take the risk on someone who has those skills and are willing to accept and learn a new industry, we may be able to bring some of our knowledge of what not to do to the fore -front. After all, success and failure of a company is universal.

I would love to stay in a corp. setting, but I think the only way to get by is by taking a few college courses and try for a State job.
