Time Frame on Career Change

How long can I expect to find a job in a new industry?

I worked in Government for about 6 years - doing fundamental statistics work for them and I have some tech skills like working knowledge of sas programming, working knowledge of sql, and really good MS excel (but that is because of my current contract job in Search advertising more than anything else).

I really wanted to work in Finance but for awhile every recruiter was telling me it would be really difficult to switch jobs, so when I was FINALLY offered a job in Search as a contractor, about 1 year ago; out of desparation I took the job.

I don't really want to do Search, but it seems like the only responses to resume postings I get is from Search companies and SAS jobs (which always think I am under-skilled in SAS). How do I break into Finance? It seems like every Analyst job in Finance is for people who already have 2-3 years in Equity Swaps or whatever

Glad to hear from someone else in the same position. I have 5 years experience as a team leader in customer service and decided I was getting no where. I had learned valuable people skills and pertinent excel skills from statistical reporting while on the job. I decided to make the switch to a finance career and have recently earned my MBA emphasizing in finance. Every job requires 2-3 experience!!! I have an MBA doesn't that count for something???
