Career Tips

From a small company IT guru to.....

Hi,

I recently left a 13 year job as a jack of all trades but master of none with a very small company (20 people).  For the entire 13 years I was the accountant and for the last 7 years I was also the IT manager.  The company was/is on shaky ground and I knew staying would not develop more skills, so I left the job (and the city) without a job lined up.  I'm not changing careers per se since I have some experience (I'm trying to focus my IT career on DB administration with long term goals to advance to business intelligence development.)

I've got a ton of education (MBA, MCSA, MCDBA) but I'm finding that my experience in the basics of DBA/development is not enough for the positions I find.  I don't have a network of colleagues or friends who have any contacts or information to help.

This is a alteration of the new-to-job market "can't get a job without experience but can't get experience without a job".  I get quite a bit of interest based on my resume but once they find out the size company I worked for and the basic tasks performed, then I am rejected for not having enough technical experience.

Other than ranting, my question is for other career changers who face the same dilemma of a long work experience but not as developed as others with the same number of years.  I'm willing to take a step back to get into the field.  (I've also got a certain amount of "golden handcuffs")

What do I do to overcome the over-qualified resume/under-qualified experience dilemma?  Do I have to back to entry level?

Thanks

My question to you is why not build on what you've done rather than start another structure?

It sounds like you have done well. This job can be replicated in another company of similar size. You have a niche that you could build on.

Any management experience? If you have those skills and abilities, you could look towards becoming a Manager of Finance & Admin, which often encompasses IT - in particular with those educational credentials.

What about this kind of path?

I've had minimal management experience.  Over the past 5 years, I have had no staff.  It has been only me in my "departments"--one man departments.  I was trying to change careers from accounting into more IT technical areas.
