Relocating to North Carolina

I am relocating to North Carolina at the end of the year, I will be living in the Charlotte area.  I will be getting married next year and my fiance is retired.  I am 52 and have worked at my job for the State of Connecticut for 10 years. I work as a secretary for the Division of Criminal Justice and I work in one of the court houses in the prosecutor's office. I like my job and I have learned alot but now I want to use this new opportunity to do something new and I look at this move as a new adventure.  My problem is how do I find a new job in an area I know very little about? And I know that my age will be a factor.  How do I start and I really don't want to end up doing the same old thing, if anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.  I have raised 4 children who are all grown and I will be started new just me and my fiance who is not from there either.  Thank you.

Hi Butternut55,

Ten years in the Criminal Justice division have you thought about becoming a paralegal?  I am 53 years old have reared 3 childern and have no plans to remarry at this time , but I am presently going to school for my AAS in paralegal studies. I don't know much about North Carolina but my son goes to school at Livingstone College in Salisbury. I will ask him if he has met anyone there who may help guide you in the right direction.

Talk with ya soon,

Thank you I would appreciate any help or guidance from anyone in the North Carolina area that has any suggestions or knows anything about the job market down there, I know that I won't make the money that I make here in CT but that's allright.

Hi ButterNut!  I'm in Eastern NC - waaaay over here near the beach.  Charlotte has TONS of opportunities.  My suggestions are Federal (lots of military/civil jobs here), NC State (excellent retirement & other benefits), then Corporate...that is if you are ready for some work/life balance after the first 2 years at a new job.

Charlotte should have plenty of legal opportunities for you - it's a hot spot with all the immigration stuff these days.

Good luck!

I live in Charlotte, NC and there's certainly opportunity in the area. It's still growing and our economy (at least in parts of the city) is still strong. Housing market's holding decent unlike the rest of the country. If you don't know what you'd like to do you could try temping for a while to find out what you like. You could also try for positions as a paralegal/legal assistant (as the other poster recommended) - there are a ton of law firms in the area looking for competant assistance. You DON'T need paralegal certification to be a paralegal.
