Why do you want to leave your job

I'm searching for a new job right now. I graduated last spring and I have been with my current company for 7 months. My other experience includes working with the same company nearly every summer between school. I want to change careers and go to a different company for many reasons. First, I am required to move every year so I never get a chance to settle down. Furthermore, I don't get to choose where I relocate to and most of my current companies offices are in the middle of nowhere where I have no family or support system. I would very much like to move to a big city that has something to offer. Second, I was put on an assignment at my current location and the managers there are not carrying out my job position as it was described to me when I interviewed. They don't know anything about me or my career goals because I'm just on an assignment there from corporate. So basically I have to do what they say because it is my first year with the company and I feel like I am not doing the job that I applied for. The people who gave my the job are not cooperating with me on that either because I've talked to them about it. I do the jobs that they tell me to do because I need my job, but I definitely feel that it's not helpful to me to have applied for a certain poisition and I'm ending up doing jobs that I didn't apply for and even worse I don't like them at all! If I wanted the job they're making me do, then I would have applied for it.  At this point, the company has really upset me and I have decided that I would like to pursue a new career elsewhere doing a job that I applied for that fits my interests and skills. It was great experience, but what do I tell an interviewer when they ask me why I want to leave my current position? I don't want to talk bad about the company or seem like I'm complaining.  But what if they ask me why I don't apply to another position with my current company?
Well, I have to tell you that a lot of what you have described is early career, pay your dues reality. The company has a right to assign you to what they need.

You have a right to quit if you don't like it.

Basic, but true. And the earlier you are in your career, and the less tenure you have, in general, the less say you get in the whole process. I am generalizing of course, but that is basically it.

So, if the organization doesn't meet your needs, that's okay, but I do advise to consider whether some of this is as I have described above, because you don't want to take similar expectations to a new job and be disappointed.

Why do you want to leave your job?
  • Including my summers, I have worked there for X years / long time, etc. So, I am actually not new to the organization.
  • I feel like I am ready for the next step OR I am ready to apply my energies to another role
  • Or, it has been great working with Company X, but the job has morphed over the last 6 months towards an emphasis on Y. I am doing well, but it isn't where my interests lie. My strengths are Z and I am looking for an opportunity to build those, and contribute more to the organization
