i'd speak to your dept. manager to arrange a meeting with one of the leads in the IT dept, b/c let's face it, even in hospitals, etc. . .there's a computer support helpline with everything becoming computer-based, etc. . .gather as much information as you can and how can someone with your years of expertise and training make a smooth transition within the company. once you gain some sort of repoire with the lead, see if they'll allow you to spend a few hours here and there buddying-up with some of the techs. you  begin to network, and gain some exposure to that world, and if there's an open req on any positions in the department, try your damndest to get an interview w/ the hiring managers. . .the rest is up to you. . .be PROACTIVE!
