Career Change

I recently left a career that I spent 15 yrs. building.  It was by far the hardest decision I have made but the passion was gone and my attitude was deteriorating.  Now I find myself overwhelmed and not because of the abundance of choices but the complete lack of direction.  I know that there are plenty of opportunities for someone like myself but I need guidance in matching my skills set with potential careers.

I would appreciate some advice on this subject.

Thank you,

Joe

Joe, you have asked a big question and we don't have a lot of information to help you with.

You may want to consider working with a career coach or career counsellor to help you through this process.

One piece of advice on what you can do to shed some light on this is invest some time in understanding your  professional background. Analyze each job you have had, the organizations you have worked with, and your path to date. For each, what kinds of outcomes did you create? How did you make a difference? Primary job objectives. People, project, process wins. What were you known for? This is a big process but worth it.

Then pick the examples that resonate with you - of you working in your strengths, making a diference, getting results, having fun and shape a story around each one.
  • What was the situation or challenge of the example?
  • What actions did you take
  • What were the results?
These examples and stories often provide clues as to what we are really good at, where and in what kinds of situations we fit best. And it is a necessary process in then going out and selling your background - i.e. providing proof.

What does your network see you doing?
