can they call my current employer

When you apply for a job through Monster can an interested employer call your current employer?  This is probably an easy question, but I just want to know for sure.

Unless you specifically indicate that you do not want a prospective employer to contact your current employer, they can.

How do you put on your resume not to call current employer, and where would you put that?

The only way they can contact your current or former employers is if you give them the addresses and phone numbers on a job application, and check off the boxes that ask if it is okay to contact them, or if it states it elsewhere on the application, and you sign it.

You should not have any contact info, or phone numbers for your jobs on your resume to start with.  Just list the company name and town, city, and state they are located in.

You do not need to "give permission" for a reference check. Nor do you need to provide a phone number. If you do not want a company contacted you have to let the company you are applying to know that but the mere fact that you have expressed interest in them is enough to start a reference check. Any company who knows how to look in a phone book can find the phone number of an employer that you listed.

You do have to sign permission for a background check which would include credit and criminal histories. There is other criteria that is needed than just your name like your social security and birthdate. These are items that are not included on every application nor are they ever included on a resume.

Many hiring managers check references before offering a face to face interview. It is one way to weed out the people who you may not want in your organization. Of course, a decent manager would give the candidate an opportunity to explain a negative reference. Some may even check employment references to make sure what you are telling them is what the employer has told them. Again, a decent company would allow for the opportunity to explain any differences.

If you did not want the prospective employer to contact your current employer before you interview, you can include this fact in your cover letter or, if you don't have a cover letter, you can include this in either the "additional information" section of your resume or put it in parenthesis by your current employer's name.

Another option could be to put "Company Confidential" as your current employer (instead of the actual company name), if you' re really worried about them knowing you are looking.

They can call anyone they want.  USUALLY, they don' t call until after they' ve interviewed you.  Usually, they don' t call your current employer if you ask them not to but they CAN call anyone they want.
