Switching Jobs

I am a transportation engineer and have about 8 years of total experience in my field.  I currently live in Augusta, Georgia and work for a mid size engineering company and enjoy my work.  My problem is that I do not enjoy where I am living.  I am thinking about leaving Georgia and relocating either to where my family lives in Virginia or where my wifes family lives in Texas.

I started my career in Virginia and worked almost 5 years for a national firm before I left and worked for a local city government.  About two years ago, my wife was offered a promotion in Georgia and I left my job with the city government.  I only had approximately 18 months of employment with the local city government.  And for the last two years I have been in my current position.

My big question is whether I should leave my current position within the next six to nine months or if I should stick it out longer where I currently live.  Would I appear as a job hopper to people hiring?  I left my first job since they kept talking about getting rid of my department (which they did 4 months after I left) so it was a self preservation thing.  The second job I left due to my wife's relocation to Georgia.  I stayed with my first job for five years so I can show that I will stay with a company, but if I switch jobs it would be my third job in 5 years.

Any advice out there.  Thanks for your help.

I have the impression that you know what you want, at least job wise. For me that does make you a job hopper and I don´t think you should worry about that idea. if you think that you are a job hopper, people might perceive you as a job hopper. If you think you just want to find a similar job in another place, people will perceive you as someone that knows what he wants and will respect you for that.

I hope this has helped you and that I have made myself clear. Good luck!
