Creative Unemployed and Lost

Hello my name is Dennis Natal. I graduated from highschool of Art and Design in manhattan back in 2003. After graduating I went on to study Audio Engineer at Touro College. I became certified, but the school didn't offer job placement so I was left to my own devices. Devices that have led me to work jobs not related to my skills and interests and living paycheck to paycheck. I was recently layed off from a job, not related to my interest. I saw it as a blessing and a curse. Maybe a much needed push elsewhere. But 4 months down the line, Im still pushing only to get pushed back.

What can I do to get into art related jobs that pay well or music related jobs that pay well. Freelance is frustrating and at times unreliable, you can have work one week or still be waiting for payment on last months job. Does anyone know where I could go ? any leads ? I have samples of my work. Both music and art. I need something solid, any info would be great.

Okay, I assume you've used the job boards like Monster, Craigslist, Careerbuilder, Hotjobs, etc.; what about Media Bistro? www.mediabistro.com.  Have you Googled music jobs to find arts/music related jobs/ I'm a writer, so virtually all my arts-related sites are writing related, but sometimes those can have music-related jobs. Media Bistro covers the whole entertainment/arts spectrum, and they aren't always freelance. Give it a try, and good luck.
www.aquent.com is a creative placement agency - or rather contract agency. Very solid reputation last time I heard.

Dennis,
I think you need a plan. You will excuse me for saying so, but its my job. You don't sound like you have direction or a master plan for how to make a living in the industry you have chosen.

The reality is that there are countless talented artists, graphic designers, etc. And far fewer paying jobs.

You have graphics. You have audio. What can you do that takes advantage of these? You mentioned the Music industry, but that's an uphill battle. Don't get me wrong. Go for it. But I am telling you, with the best intentions, that it is NOT an industry that you just fall into it. Music. Film. Sports. High fashion. There are legions of people who want of piece of these worlds and will sleep on the doorstep of the decison maker to get a few minutes of their time. If you aren't that committed, then look for something else.

You know your Audio technician world better than me. By all means. Investigate.

One thought I have is commercial companies that utilize creative people. Companies pumping out home decor, furnishings, wall prints, novelties, cards, books, .... and places that use audio. You would need to start develop a target list of companies that do this kind of thing and approach them.

There are the design agencies of course, and you can look at that route as well.

Personal responsibility. Go make it happen!
