Career Tips

I need some help.

Hey everybody,

Maybe someone here can give me a little direction, because I've got no idea what I should be doing. I'm 23 with a BA in East Asian Studies, and I recently spent two years teaching English in Japan. It was a lovely time, but I knew I didn't want to stay there forever so I came back to the States. I don't really speak Japanese and I don't see any practical application for my degree here in my area of Upstate NY. I've always been incredibly interested in politics and government so I decided to go back to school to get a degree in Communications with a minor in Political Science, which is what I'm working on right now. I need to get a job some time very soon, but I don't have any idea where I should start looking. I'm afraid I'm going to be stuck with some meaningless part time position for the time being, and I'm not really looking forward to that, but I don't know that I've got any other choice right now. Any ideas?
Your situation reminds me of the situation I have been in - twice! Not knowing what you want in a job can be frustrating and leaving you insecure about yourself, your job, your studie. I have been there.

What helped for me is to try several things. Even though it has been temporary, uninteresting jobs, it was something to do. I learned a lot and it helped me to try and see what worked for me and what not. Furthermore there are a lot of books and tests - even on this site - that could help you with insights on what you want, who you are, what type of work and company you could be looking for. And trying things out. if you don“t try, you will never know.

A little advise: trust your instict. It is the best, most trusting tool YOU have.

Another idea could be to talk to friends, family, and just people about what you want and ask them to give you feed-back and share ideas and experiences. Important here is to take what you can use and know that the experiences of other people are there experiences and you will have your own.

I hope something has helped you. Good luck in everything and enjoy!
Your start isn't that far off from mine. I did a BA in Poli Sci, with a focus on Asian Studies and Japanese and headed off to Japan, yes for a bit of teaching, but I had been bitten by the business bug and was able to land an interesting "assistant project manager" job in a consumer products company. This then led me to an MBA. My career took a big turn after the MBA, but nevertheless, this first experience was a stepping stone.

In my case, I went after two thing for that first job: Interest. And Relationship. I purposefully reached out to Alumni in Japan and that landed me my spot.

So, you can make something happen. Follow your interests. See what opportunities there are. Really campaign for them. Use Monster as a reseach tool. Use your student status to get informational meetings with organizations you'd like to work for. And take advantage of the assessment and profiling tools, and your university career centre.

Good luck.
