Auto Technician career change
I am a 33 year old Master Automotive Technician with a BA in Criminal Justice from the University of Delaware (1997 graduate). I originally intended upon attending law school, but was burnt out after 4 years of undergrad and did not want to go if I could not give it 110%. I ended up managing the restaurant that I worked in through college, and decided after 3 years that I did not want to remain in that business. After some research, I decided to become an automotive technician. I became a master tech and am very good at what I do, but I now hate it. I make good money, but the headaches and volatility that go along with the car dealer business are wearing on me. I am married and have 2 small children. My wife has been home for nearly 5 years caring for them, and I feel stuck. I know I have skills that should be transferrable, but am having difficulty determining what path to take. I want to make a career change and am wondering if anyone can offer some insight on what career path may suit me. I am technically inclined, have a college degree, and management experience. Thank you.
Nobody has any advise? Is there a place in the automotive world for you. A bit more business oriented. Or management oriented. Similar organization or different, but that would utilize your knowledge of automotive experience. Can you combine your criminal justice degree and auto experience into some specialized role in law enforcement or legal? Is there a role somewhere where they need someone on car theft teams, investigations, .... Extrapolate from the service world you are in. What kind of operation is it? Can you think of similar, but different environments, where you could be effective? Could you move into an ops management, service management or some other role in a business that works under a similar model? Ian Christie Career Changers Coach | |
