Help getting into a field.
Is there anyone out there who has any suggestions with switching jobs? I currently work as a vet tech but have a degree in Psychology. I have NEVER worked in my degree field and have no experience in it. I got my degree 5yrs ago and feel helpless. I can't find a job that does not require experience or it pays very little. I cannot afford to take a job for less than what I make now, since I basically live paycheck to paycheck. I'd like to get my masters in couseling but I need to get into my field of work and just can't find an opportunity. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, or anyone who know of any jobs out there.
Many times when you want to switch to a completely new field (even if you have a degree in it) you have to take a major pay cut. Not to mention the cold hard fact is that there are no jobs for a psych major without an advanced degree. One has always needed a MSW or MS Counceling Psychology. Most people have to go on to a PhD in Psychology to make a living wage in counceling. Are your under grad grades good enough to go to grad school and work as a TA, RA, or counseling assitant at the university?
I screwed myself my last semester. I thought I wanted to switch degrees etc. so I screwed my GPA, the only chance I have is my GRE (which I fear may not be good enough to get me into a school). I definitely want to get my Masters, but I feel that my application will not be very good considering my lack of experience. I understand the pay cut but I cannot afford it. The only reason I got the job I'm in now is because of the pay. My previous job had me overdrafted each paycheck and this one is better but not by a lot. Most of the jobs I see are $6-$7 an hour and I have applied to numerous positions w/ the state. I need a foot in the door and cannot find it. I very much feel stuck and unhappy.
i have a degree in forensic psychology. one of my first jobs in the field was as a counselor in a group home for mentally ill adolescent girls. it didn't require much experience - i learned alot about the field and it was a great stepping stone. i then began working as a case manager. try taking civil service tests in your area, that is how i got my last job with my county government. they train you and it pays very well. i would try this before you go back to school. also, in your resume, highlight your ability to work well with people, especially from diverse backgrounds, as well as your ability to handle a crisis situation calmly. good luck!
First, do you know what kind of work you want to do with your Psychology background? That may lead you to your sources of jobs. On Craigslist you could use the "Post" option to give your credentials and any work you have done-paid or voluntary. My research has shown that if you are lacking sufficient credentials, you will want to highlight your actual experiences. If those are lacking, get in some volunteer work in the field in which you DO wish to work. For example, I have an associates degree in business but if I wanted to teach then I would list the volunteer work I have been doing with K-12 grade students as a tutor in math, reading and writing. Even if you don't have the proper credentials, sometimes any degree will be a stepping stone for you. Ask people in the field you are interested in what they'd suggest you do. Talk to your state employment department or the community colleges or even a hospital administrator to get their opinions. Collect business cards for future references. Make the looking part of the job you are interested in. Do you realize that looking for the job is a job in itself? That's a startling idea sometimes but think of all the knowledge you will gain in your pursuits. you can do this. Sometimes it just takes getting to talk to the right person. You may wish to go to the college nearest you and talk to someone from the psychology dept-they may have an intern program available or the county hospital could have some good information for you to look into.
I too have a degree in psychology..no experience in it. I however am not looking to go in that field. Try finding a job in that career field and get a part time job to supplement your income. then go back to school part time.. try getting a job with your state division of youth and family services... | |
