career change

Hello all,

My name is Andrew and I am in the middle of a career change and need some advice. It is not a big contrast change. I am currently an Automotive Technician and I am also an Engineering Student. It is my goal to earn a degree in Electrical Engineering. My problem is this: I am looking for an Engineering Technician job to help transition this change. It is my feeling that I need relevent experience to get a position as an Engineer when I graduate and I feel an Engineering Technician position is the way to do that.

Here is my problem. I am not getting any interviews for the numerous Engineering Technician jobs I have applied for. Many of them are not even asking for any specific experience or education. I feel my current job prepares me well for these positions and even indeed a career as an Engineer but, I just don't feel like I am being given a chance.

I am wondering what your Engineering school says. Electrical Engineering is one of those fields where there seems to be a lot of companies ready to sign-up new grads into jobs that are designed to take in and develop new engineers. If you are at a good school that attracts those companies, then, this opportunity should be available to you upon graduation, regardless of the kind of experience you have. Have you had a conversation with the school's career centre about this? If not, you should.

That doesn't answer your question about getting a job now, but perhaps might lessen the urgency...

I have spoken to them yes. A job when graduating is likely not a problem but, one now is. My current job is becoming increasingly stressful due to the volatility in the automotive industry so, getting out now would be nice. I guess my real issue is that I am 35 and if I wait until I graduate to break into the field I may be considered too old.
