Career Tips

breaking into fashion

I came to the U.S. from Russia 6 yrs. ago with background in Civil Law.  I graduated in 2007 with double major in Marketing and Finance.  I'm really interested in clothing/retail/wholesale industry.  I've applied to hundreds training programs for buying/planning/product development and other entry-level positions without any luck so far.  Now I'm 28 y.o, almost a year out of school and still waitressing. Should I just get an entry-level job in a different industry? Help!

As I'm sure you can imagine, fashion is very difficult to get into.  If you're looking for buyer sort of positions, you might do better to try getting a retail sales position then moving up within the company after you've been there a year.  If nothing else, it won't be any worse than waitressing and will be a step in the right direction.

You should also take a good look at your resume and be sure it is showcasing your background properly and tying into what you want to be doing.  See the career center at your alma mater for assistance.  They may also have some job postings for you to look at, can help with interview skills and may have some networking ideas for you.  Find out if there are any alumni working in fashion that can give you some advice.

Finally, I don't know where you're located, but location has a lot to do with fashion.  New York is the obvious choice in the US but there is also a huge garment industry in San Francisco with Levi, Gap, Jessica McClintock and many others.  Where fashion is produced, you find jobs.

Good luck!
