Music Education NEED ADVICEGood morning everyone. I am going to school for something I love; music. Now you need to understand I am not out to be a rock star nor famous. I would like to use my education in not only teaching, but maybe studio musician, etc. Now, my question is, This is a Berklee online Masters certificate...is it worth the paper its printed on or worthless? Thanks feel free to email me direct javagrounds@hotmail.com I think you need to go into this with a very clear head. You're getting a Masters in Music. That's great and if that's what you love, terrific. The chances that is going to translate into a j-o-b however, are slim. I have no idea if this particular program is any good or not, that's something you really need to research. If you want to teach music, you can do so with a BA degree. If you want to work as a studio musician no degree is needed, just talent, connections and good luck.

First of all, what's a "Master's Certificate"? I know about Master's degrees but have never heard of a Master's certificate. A somebody who went back to school to earn a 2nd bachelor's degree (graduating in 3 months) I'm a somewhat of a veteran in those matters. In general, I'm highly suspicious of online degrees. Every modern college is online now thanks to support from websites like Blackboard. You turn in your assignments online, take tests, discuss with classmates, communicate with instructors. There are tremendous online resources and websites. However, I see fundamental problems with school without a real campus and only a virtual one. Several years ago I was out of work and interviewed for one of those virtual schools. The position was a sales position. The actual name was "academic advisor" or something like that but it was really sales-trying to get more people to sign up for the classes. I would strongly advise to stay away from that "college" although I don't know what others are like. Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger graduated from one of those virtual colleges and earned a Bachelor's degree several years ago. He has been a millionaire since the 1970s...obviously this degree was mostly for the satisfaction so he could tell his mom and Austria and tell her he had finally graduated from somethign like she always wanted. If you're doing it for satisfaction or prestige that's fine but if you're like: "I'm starving now but thanks to this online degree I will pay my bills"-it won't happen, I'm sorry. Life doesn't work like that. You need to have a more realistic plan. | |
