Retired minister needs a job

    Hi all...

My father in law is a retired minister (missionary, actually) who just returned stateside from a 27-year post in Italy. He's having a really hard time finding employment (the retirement benefits aren't great, as you can imagine.)

His strengths are: Public Speaking, positive attitude, excellent writing skills. He currently has almost 30 years of service under his belt, but he's just at a loss as to how to translate this into the secular workforce. He is currently working construction with my brother-in-law, but the pay is sporadic and Dad isn't sure that, at 60 years of age, this line of work is a good idea long-term. His wife has already taken a job working nights as a supervisor for a cleaning crew at a pharmaceutical facility, and with his sporadic pay becoming an issue, he has taken an interview for a similar position.

He also: speaks fluent Italian, hand-crafts knives, loves to read, and loves a good cup of coffee. Probably doesn't help, but I thought I'd list them.

Do you have ANY helpful advice for his situation? I find it hard to believe that his whole life of experience isn't translatable...

Thanks!

He should look at non-profits and social services agencies for positions (groups that work with children, seniors, high risk, disadvantaged, etc.).  Also chaplain positions with PD, FD, hospitals, hospices, prisons. private boarding schools or similiar groups.  He should be playing to his strengths which should be ministering (in a religious or secular form).  Search Monster's job section for Chaplain and you'll find a (surprising) number of openings.

Hope this helps!

Tess
