Position Change dilemma

I am a 3rd shift production supervisor in a company. It has been made clear to me, from my boss in that area of the company, that he likes my work and that moving up is only a matter of time. Mean while on the other side of the company they have asked me to take a job in HR. Nether job comes with a pay raise, as I am paid fairly high already. Both positions will move me to day shift in a matter of time which was a concern. I feel in my production area I am more secure if the company was to ever down size, merge, or get bought out but am not 100% if that holds true in HR. My question really is does one position hold a more marketable future with a greater advantage in the job market should I ever  be laid off. Would it be to my advantage to hold one position over another in case I do ever have to look for work somewhere else. I am happy currently with my company so do not plan on leaving so that is not a current factor.

Well without a crystal ball, I doubt we can really answer that for you.  I can say however that it is not true that you can hide out on the 3rd shift and avoid future downsizing.  As I'm sure you've heard, bad things run downhill.  If they want to downsize half the day crew, there's nothing to stop them from dropping a quarter of the night crew and shifting a quarter of the downsized day folks there.

While it is good to think ahead a bit, you seem a bit obsessed with an inevitable termination of your job.  That doesn't sound like a healthy mindset to me.  You should be thinking- Would I like being in HR?  Would it be a good long term career move for me?  If you like HR, take it.  HR is VERY hard to get into so if that's something you'd like, grab the chance.  Generally speaking, the more things you know how to do, the more employable you are.

Thank you for your advice. While I am not looking for a change from my current employer I like to always have a back up plan as manufacturing industry has been known to suddenly uproot and move south or be bought out and downsized unexpectedly. I do not have a foot out the door, I just want to look at things in case I suddenly find myself out the door. Having spent 24 years at my last job, I guess I was looking more for a schooling of sorts on where those two avenues lead in todays job market if I suddenly had to pursue a new job. Both field have there pros and cons at this point and I am deeply thinking as two bosses are waiting for my reply as to which position I will take or stay in. It is good to be wanted that is for sure. It is bizarre that my wife goes by Tess also.
