Career Tips

Tired of 9 to 5

Just looking for some advice.  My family has relocated to a different state and due to moving etc.. I haven't been working  for several months and I'm just starting the job hunt.  My experience is varied I have worked in a College setting in the student account office so am familiar with Financial Aid and have done the call center and customer service with an Insurance company.  My last job was working at a K-12 school in the library - which was fabulous.  I have good people and phone skills.  There has to be something more than working with a headset glued to your head for 8 hours.  My dream job would be working at home or somewhere else with some travel.  I'm not sure how to start looking for something like that and not sure if a career coach is helpful or not.  I did sign up with a temp agency just a week ago.  Not sure if that is the right angle.

Thank You.

Sounds like you worked in the educational field and mentioned travel.  Try calling your local schools.

You sound very broad in what you want.  The first idea is to figure out what fields you would like to focus on.

Do you have some sort of credential for the library work? Were you working as a librarian or as a support person? If you loved that, it is certainly one avenue of research to go down.

You do have a few experiences in the education world, so that might allow you to leverage that into a role in a college, university, K12 or something similar.

One exercise I suggest is a lot of keyword searching for jobs - with the goal of writing down / cutting and pasting jobs that appeal to you - under the condition that you would make a probable candidate. This exercise can uncover areas, industries, roles that you might not have thought of and give you some focus. Or, surprise you with an exciting, specific role you want to go for.

Remember, when you apply to something, you have to provide them reasons and evidence that Bridge your experience to what they need and their environment.

"My background working in College and K12 settings would enable me to quickly understand your environment..."

Answer the big question: Why me?

First of all thank you for the reply it is appreciated.  I have actually applied at my local school district but I think when you apply in the middle of a school year it is hard as most schools have all the staff they need right now until next fall.  You are right I need to decide what direction I want to go.  I like planning and organizing events and love fashion and I enjoy dealing with people.  I am thinking I need to go back to school to get a crash course in something.  Thanks for the advice.
