Advice on my next moveHey all, I'm wondering if you can help me. I graduated college in 2007 with a BA in Communication Studies and have been trying to get into the advertising and/or marketing field. Though I did have an internship, it was at a news station and not at an ad agency. Anyways, there's been no suck luck and needless to say the money is running short. Luckily, I secured a new job in the Medical Technology field and start soon. I'm sure this will help me financially and also give me 'real world' job experience, but I greatly want to break into the advertising field as soon as possible. And unfortunately, these are two different industries. Seeing as I'll be working 8-5 M-F for however long it takes, I'm wondering what can I do now in order to actually move into that direction? Thanks, I appreciate it. These are VERY hard jobs to get into. Try things like Admin Assistant at the ad agency.

I call this kind of job a rock star job (along with anything related to sports, etc.). Tons of applicants, so the companies pay you nothing, run you through the mill, let go of lots of the juniors and keep a very few. Not impossible, but hard. One of the dangers is that in the absence of in depth knowledge about options, creative, marketing oriented people automatically gravitate towards this kind of job, without knowing what else might be out there. There are all kinds of Agency-side businesses (PR, Ad, design, creative, direct marketing, interactive). And there are client side businesses. You need to get some experience somewhere. Internships are one way to go. Assistant role in a marketing dept. could be good. Or think about uncovering companies that aren't the big name brands, smaller companies, where there might be less competition for that experience. Ian Christie Career Changers Coach | |
