Tired of customer service/sales

I graduated last May with a BA in English an a Minor in Mass Communications. I had trouble finding a job at first (I am geographically limited but there are tons of good companies to work for) and I found one eventually that I thought I'd be happy with. Now that I've been there for a while, though, I'm finding that the majority of the job is telemarketing (I was under the impression it was part of the job but it wan't almost all I'd be doing day in and day out). In college it was easy to get jobs that involved customer service and sales, but they were part time jobs either to try a new industry or pay the bills. Now I feel like I have to list that experience to show I wasn't just sitting around in college and I feel like I'm trapped into only customer service/sales positions. I'm getting really burnt out on sales.

I do enjoy working with people but I would prefer a fixed list of contacts that I can build up long term relationships with. Right now I talk to lots of people but I don't build up much of a relationship at all. I also have some background in public relations and marketing, but I'm hesitant to pursue marketing type jobs because of the sales aspects. My question is, what careers should I be looking into where I can use my people skills but I won't have to sell things? If I at least had some ideas, then perhaps I could alter my resume to help me get those kinds of positions.

You sound just like me:  I have a BA in English and since I graduated from college, I have had nothing but call-center jobs, including telesales.  I too am getting sick of it and feel stuck.

I have a few suggestions, however: try applying to non-profit organizations for position as an Assistant Director or program co-ordinator for fundraising.  You should also check into doing something with your local government (or even move out of town, if need be).

Another option is to get into tv or radio with your degree.  At least you are still young enough to change careers or go back to school
