Need some advice
So I made the mistake of graduating college with an "Interdisciplinary degree" which really didn't qualify me to do anything. I studied alot of music but didn't really have the desire to be a band director at a school so I opted out of that. Nonetheless, I ended up in a decent career working for an insurance company doing Loss surveys. Doesn't pay great and I have to travel all the time. The traveling and long days are getting old. I am thinking about going back to school for something but I don't know what. I thought about nursing but I am probably not thinking about it for the right reasons. I wanted to do it because you get paid by the hour and you can work three 12hr shifts and be done for the week (I could be wrong on this, but this is my understanding of it) I was also thinking about trying to be a firefighter but I have no idea what that entails. Basically, I would love a job where I could work an odd shift so I could have time to teach private music lessons on the side. I have taken alot of college courses but I never really could figure out what I wanted to do. I just don't want to work at Mc Donalds after spending so much time and money on college. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I certainly understand how you feel. It sounds like you may still be young enough that time is on your side: you have time to decide. A few things that I have done is take inventory of what I have accomplished, what I am skilled at, what I would like to do for a living, and what I can not tolerate any longer. I have also researched careers on the US Dpt. of Labor's website to get an idea of what careers I am interested in may be a good fit and what the expected job outlook is for them. Outlook is very important because you don't want to take go back to school for something that may be obselete (like English Lit--my major). You should also talk to a career coach or counselor. Really decide on what will make you happy. If you don't have a house, you are lucky because that is one less expense you have to worry about; you can afford to go back to school ad if you have to take a pay cut, it may not drastically affect you. Good luck. It's very hard to find that career that is perfect for you.
It sounds like you are willing to accept a bit of risk - meaning a couple of gigs to make a whole. Firefighting. Nursing. Etc. I think you need to do a bit of focused research. Getting a real sense of what each of these entails, intake processes, candidates standards, and your suitability. Both of these have very clear cut paths. There are typically waiting lists for nursing schools, but check it out. Ian Christie | |
