Job Change and38; Job Title

Hi: I was working at this place in the Silicon Valley for about 5 years (Consultant + full time). It was suchlong time that I was getting bored of the work as well not getting enough moneyfor my experience and knowledge. I was so frustrated that I spoke to my managerand gave him hints about my salary but to no effect, ultimately I startedlooking out for a job and got one on a 1st try.

Now my dilemma... I was a senior person at my company with low salary, the newjob is 'good' salary but the job title is such that I do not like it (sounds junior),but the job responsibilities are more or less same. My question is how do thecompanies come up with these titles when they say they need experience of 10+years and how can it effect me professionally.

I'm happy about the job change and 'money' that I'm going to get but it’s justthat the job title gives an impression of a junior person! Did I goofed in my desperationto looking for a change (and more money).

Please advice.

Job title inflation isn't good for your resume. Small, underfunded companies often use titles as a form of non-monetary compensation.

Or some small and mid-sized businesses get title happy.

It can be very damaging to have too big a title. The key thing is when you leave, how is the market going to look at it at first glance....
  • This person is too senior (read expensive). Skip to next resume
  • This person isn't credible. The job they did and the title don't match.
Either isn't good, as you can imagine.

From what I know so far, it sounds like you might need to be somewhere in between.

Sometimes, we can go to our employer and ask about a title change. Their willingness to do that depends on internal equity - meaning are there other people to consider and how bureaucratic is the organization.

What are the two titles?
