segue out of admin work

I have been working as an admin/secretary for most of my "career."  However, I loathe this work.  I am so over-qualified, I was told by one recruiting firm to "dumb yourself down."  I cannot take another job in which I am responsible for someone else's calendar, mail, and appointments!

Unfortunately, with only a BA, and living in Boston, a city replete w/brilliant, accomplished people, I don't know how to move into a position that I would find challenging.  ANY SUGGESTIONS?  PLEASE??

I am incredibly adept at learning new software and fixing computers generally, however, I have no certification.  I have had success managing office renovation projects and streamlining and improving various procedures; however, when I look for positions with those qualifications, I find specific requirements, usually involving certification or, e.g., SAP, expertise.

I realize I will likely have to take a cut in pay in order to gain the skills I need to move into challenging work that I find rewarding, however, I am not sure where to start.  My age is a hindrance - I am 38.  Again, any suggestions or insight would so, so appreciated!

If you like computer work, check out certifications -- and find out from the classifieds and companies you admire and want to work at what programs they specifically use so that way you can go in with your certificates in hand and blow them away with your up to date knowledge.

THx so much for responding.  I love computers, and seem to pick up anything relating to very easily, w/the exception of coding.  Will def look into that.  I'd been wondering it that might be a good option!

Hope your id is not indicative of another overworked, underappreciated secretary out there...

You're welcome.  Also, with certifications, it helps with the salary.  So it's still relatively easy to make major money in the IT field if you keep updated on the latest stuff.

as far as the tag, yep, pretty much.

In addition to the above suggestions around the IT world, here are a few ideas...
  • Office Management: This is a specific function, one that combines facilities (the reno you managed), with systems (not IT, but the planning of ensuring everyone has what they need), space planning, etc. Titles might vary, but that would be a good keyword to start with.
  • Small / Med vs. Big: In general, there tends to be opportunities in smaller organizations to have broader roles
  • Assistant Manager of something: Operations, Service, Facilities, Support....a role that will put you in situations where you need to manage projects, deal with a lot of different things, and learn. Note that it isn't a specialist role.

Hello Viq912,

First, good luck with the j/search. I read your reply to Jscharf [Teaching] in which you mentioned you knew someone who became an ED.Consultant, and I was wondering if I could possibly e-mail the person to ask if he/she could provide info as to what the requirements/procedures are to become one? I attempted to look online, but didn't really find how to go about it.

I am in a very similar situation to what Jscharf is experiencing and thought Ed/Cnsltncy might be worth checking into. Any assistance provided would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.
