Career Tips

promotions

I have been a homemaker for last four years. Before that I worked for a company for over ten years. In that time I was given three promotions. At each promotion I was given a new hire date. My question is on a job aplacation or on my resume  do I put date of employment for from the first date of hire to the last date of employment? Or do I start with my first position to my first promotion and in the spot for reason for leaving put promotion?  Then go on to next job until I get to last propotion.? It will look like I had four jobs in ten years, but with the same company. This was a health care program that laid us all off and reopened with part time workers . I could have stayed and worked for half of what I was making. My choice to leave. The program then closed for good a year later.

You do your resume something like this:

Acme Company 1998 to 2008

  • Last job here (2006-2008) list of duties, etc.
  • Job before that (2004-2006) list of duties, etc.
  • Job before that (2002-2004) list of duties, etc.
  • Original job (1998-2002) list of duties, etc.

Then in your cover letter, you make mention of your 3 promotions while at Acme and tie that into what they're looking for like this:

As you can see from my resume, I had 3 promotions while at Acme.  This demonstrates my exceptional abilities as a team player who is able to take on challenges and make a difference in the company (or something else that they sound like they're looking for- technical skills, pro-active, whatever).

On the application you put Acme Company 1998-2008.  Under job title if you have room, put all 4, if not put the last one or (see resume).
