To school or not to school...
So here I am about 10 years out of school, with a degree, BA, in French - I know, I know, what the hell was I thinking??? Well, I was planning on teaching, and at the time, was working in IT to get through school, and it was then that I realized that I could make a lot more in the IT world than I could as a teacher. Now I had planned on going on and getting my Masters, and possibly a PhD and be teaching at the Univ. level, but family and the need for $$ came first, and here I am 10 years later, stuck in the mire of my own creation. So with the French degree - I get little or no love from the high paying players, and when I do get in the door there is always a lot of explaining and justification etc. So I am hoping to get a bit of advice on whether or not to go back to school and pursue an MBA, or some other form of Grad degree to help do a couple of things, 1) launch into the next echelon of pay scales 2) deflect some of the scrutiny by recruiters looking at the educational background, and ease into the inverviews with less friction...or maybe just move to the middle of nowhere and start teaching my way up the pay scale... Any advice is welcome, Merci d'avance :-S Salut! From reading your post, I can see that you're not as lost as you think you are. Don't regret having majored in French. In fact, I can see much promising career opportunities in the coming days if you pursue an MBA. With the economy as being global nowadays, it doesn't hurt to be fluent in another language, if anything, it will make you much more marketable. Depending on your experiences and GRE scores, some University will pay you to be in their program. Granted the pay isn't high, but at least you won't have to owe anything while obtaining that degree. The downside is that you might have to be a TA (teacher's assistant). Some programs also offers, internship/co-op. This gives you an opportunity to explore the business field. Majoring in the language arts does help in that it gives you an advantage in the communication arena. Use this to your advantage and I'm sure everything will be alright. Bonne chance! | |
