Less money, less commuting
I made a pretty good pile of money during the dot-com boom but I need to stay busy. I've been doing so via IT work for the last 30 years to which I note: I'm really really tired of the multi-hour commute, and I'm really really tired of having to re-invent my career every year. What I want is to do anything for anything that doesn't involve commuting and where I can expect to know what it is I'm going to do tomorrow. Unfortunately my home town consists largely of the county courthouse, a hospital, and homes that commuters live in. If you're not a doctor, lawyer or nurse, you commute or flip burgers. Actually I wouldn't mind the latter but I'm "over qualified". Well there you have it. You can settle for a boring paper pushing desk job in city or county government (when one opens up) or you can have high life and excitement (and commute and uncertainty). Those are pretty much the two avenues that are open to most people.
