Career Tips

new healthcare career

Hi,
I am new to this site. I am hoping I can get some career advice that will help lift my spirits. I have a undergraduate degree in Biology from a great school in California and was well on my way to getting a Doctorate in Optometry degree but school politics got in the way and I was forced to leave the program. I moved to the midwest to be with my husband. I am extremely scared because my student loans have kicked in and total 100K already, I don't have a job. And everyday I feel like my chances of getting a job that I will be happy with, earn good money seem to be slipping further away. I feel cheated that I couldn't finish my degree as I only had one more year left. I am thinking about going back to school, but don't know if I can still utilize my credits that I earned in optometry school or if I have to start a new field. I looked into phyical therapy, public health, and nursing. But I am just really scared of starting over. Could you please help. I love working with people and would like to start earning some descent money! I want a job that offers flexibility as I would like to move back to California in 1-2 years. Hoping my husband gets a job transfer. Any advice on where to start would be great!

I am glad you are interested in nursing!  With your current degree and experience, you may already have the pre-reqs required to get into nursing school.  California offers many accelerated programs designed for those who already have a degree in another field.  You may consider looking into that.  Another option is becoming a physician's assistant, physical therapist or just biting the bullet and completing your optomtry degree!

Hang in there, healthcare is desperate for someone with you background!

Good luck,

KTW
