Career change to less money
Hopefully someone may have advice for me. I am 43 and went back to college, rec. my BS in Organizational Leadership from a prominent University. I am currently in asphalt construction as a QA technician. This job pays about 33k per year with 3 months unemployment benefits total is around 38k. My job is dead end and have been trying to change within the organization for over 1 1/2 years with no luck. I really want out of this type of work since it involves long hours and Saturdays. No time off during the work year from March to Dec., this makes it hard for family vacations unless we go at Xmas. Anyways, I am trying to get in the banking business. I have an interview for a collector position. Doing research on the salary for this shows low of 26, high of 41k. I know you are not suppose to go down in salary but I dont think I have a choice here. With over 13 years in my previous position, my job is apparently not relevant in business career. If I was to accept this position, I feel I would be much better off in the long run, as there are always postings for this company. I believe promotions would come easily once I was able to show my abilities. I have to start somewhere. Any advice. The company is a large banking Co..
Yes you have to start somewhere but you also have a degree and that works in your favor. Your degree doesn't seem to have a lot to do with construction work yet you made it work. So I would see the diploma as a huge plus in your favor. Stop focusing on the future and take things one step at a time. Anticipate what will be asked of you, are your references all in a row and ready to vouch high praise for you? Come looking sharp and be awake and focused for your interview. Ask about the responsibilities of your job, research what the prospective employer does, what latest news if they do community work or what they look like on the stock market, how are they doing? If they're not doing well, don't bring that up. Keep things to the positive. Ask what happened to the last employee who was in your spot? Listen and let the interviewer speak and ask questions. As far as money, don't state your desired salary right away. State you would like to be flexible and see what they have to offer based on your education, experience and skills. Then step back, smile and have eye contact. Firm dry handshake, and ask when you should anticipate hearing from them before you go.
The other poster offered great advice. I just want to add that your work experience isn't a waste relative to banking, or anything else in the business world...
Lastly, make sure that you can DO the job you are interviewing for. Just because it is an entry-level opportunity to get in, and you want in badly, doesn't mean it is the right job. Make sure that you can see yourself taking on this role and doing it, happily. Yes, the goal is to get promoted, but that will not happen unless you do really well. Good luck!
