Job Longetivity concernHello
I have a question/concern regarding job longevity and my difficulty in finding a job. I have a clerical/health background. I also have a BS in Community Health and a diploma in medical assisting, neither in which I have had a job in. My longest job was in clerical field for several years before i went back to school at age 45 and finished BS degree and then i moved to St. Louis area to work in healthcare field. I have been accepted into nursing program here in St. Louis. My trouble is trying to find job in healthcare. Several of jobs were at hospitals but unfort. they did not last very long because i think some of my problems stemmed to low self esteem and some depression (which has gotten lot better). This is something one can bring up during interview. I had two job interviews, one i know went well but neither employer bothered to send/notifiy me of their decision. I think this is really unprofessional. I even called/emailed saying i was just wondering what their decision was. How do i overcome this problem job longevity? Thanks
Carla, When you say several jobs didn't last too long, can you share how long they were and maybe we can give you a better answer on how to handle it? With regard to employers not following up or communicating their decisions, I don't think anyone would argue with you there. It's extremely inconsiderate and unprofessional. Since the majority of job applications are going toward on-line and e-mail, you'd think at minimum they'd be able to send out a generic broadcast e-mail. I'm sure you know you're not alone on that point. Apparently, they're just way to busy to be courteous. And, since most of them won't return a call or reply to an e-mail, I guess they're not concerned about the constant nagging follow-ups from candidates. But, I don't think we're going to change them. It is demoralizing, but try to do your best and not let it get to you. With the exception of job at children hospital where I worked 1.3 years as unit secretary and pt sitter, the other jobs as pt care associate lasted around 2 months with exception at one other hospital where I was training to be unit secretary. There i would have lasted longer except one of the two persons training me (different depts) was really mean to me, yelled, put me down, etc. The other person that was training me at this particular facility was nice and said i was doing a fine job. Go figure. The job at the Children's Hospital as a Unit Secretary you will have to include on your resume. One a a quarter years isn't bad at a job, especially if you left there because you were under the impression you would have a better opportunity at another hospital and in another position. Which job lasted longer? The 2 months as a PT Care Associate or the position you were training for as a unit secretary? It is best to include both of these, but you can probably leave the job with the shortest term of employment out. Were you terminated from any of these positions or did you leave on your own accord? The Unit Secretary training one you could possibly spin to an employer as something you did not feel was a proper fit the PT Care Associate position you didn't say why you left. To be consistent on all of these positions, contact the Human Resource department to find out what they would possibly say on a reference check. From there, you will have a better idea of what to say in an interview on the subject of your lack of longevity in your past few positions. I have included all job experiences no matter how short term. The unit secretary job lasted longest over one year. I left there and transferred to another hospital to work in pt care associate but the job was at nite and for 12 hrs which did not work out for me. Another pt associate job several yrs back the training was not good. I never was discharged from any job except from one non-health job where several people were laid off at one time.
Next week i have job interview with a healthcare/clerical staffing agency where i take typing tests, med terminology which i have lots of exp. in. | |
