Looking to Relocate...What to doI am currently working as an administrative assistant for a government agency in my home state of North Dakota. I have a BA in History Minor in Sociology and am 6 months away from a MPA (Master of Public Administration). I want to move to Florida, preferably the Naples area, but I am open to any part of the state really. The problem I have is deciding what type of job to look for. The position I am in now does not offer me any experience that I think will be seen as useful for anything more than a low-level position, and that is not what I want. I feel like I have a college degree so that I can answer the phone and sort the mail... In this and previous positions I have done payroll, benefits, tech support, customer service, accounts payable, accounts receivable, safety program coordination and a variety of other administrative type tasks but my ...I feel that I am just not growing where I am at, but don't know where to go from here... I want a position with relatively good pay so that I can afford to live in the more expensive area of the country, but I don't want something tedious like auditing or budget analyst which is what the job search assistant keeps trying to point me towards. I tend to be a more creative person and enjoy working with other people...I want to HAVE and assistant, not BE an assistant if you know what I mean. I almost feel as if the last 1 1/2 years of work towards my MPA (and even my BA) were a waste since the job I have now only requires HS or an AA at most...and here in ND there are not really any positions available that require or are suited towards my MPA...hence the desire to move... Sorry for the lengthy post...any advice is appreciated.. Why are you getting an MPA? What job is it that you thought that would take you to? That's what you should be targeting. If you can't figure this out, go see the career center at your school immediately. They can help you with your resume, interviews, and also do testing with you to see what your skills, abilities and interests line up to. They can show you related careers you may not have considered and lay out a path for you to follow to get to them. Tess Thanks for your reply! I first considered the MPA because I currently work for a government agency and was wanting to move up to a Human Resource Director or Agency Director level. However, in my state these jobs are hard to come by, and they generally require at least 10 yrs experience before they will even look at you, and I am not getting any experience of that type where I am at now. I am most interested in Human Resource positions, and have applied for several down in FL, but have heard nothing so far. Can anyone advise as to certifications or other education that might be helpful in lue of experience (I have some, but not managment level). My University is in a city quite far from me, I take my courses at the extention center and there is no career counselor located here (in fact I often feel that we are left adrift on our own here...) I am registered with the University's online career center for my discipline... | |
