Career Tips

one work experience, two degrees

I am having difficulty finding work or even volunteer or an internship. I spent my time in college more concerned about getting classes done (had two majors, Computer Science and English - Creative Writing) rather than networking---talking more with the professors, getting to know others in the field.

In 1992, I started one major, and in 1993, I switched to another, the second of my two degrees English-Creative Writing (Bachelor of Arts, the other, Computer Science, Bachelor of Science). In 1997, I started my second major, Computer Science. I *did* have some job/volunteer experience, but I don't mention it on my resume, due to severe difficulties with the boss.

Just recently, in 2007, I did contact one professor in Computer Science and a few others. The professor gave me unpaid job experience in technical writing/consulting. I knew him back in 2001, so I consider the experience under a year. The previous job was for ten years, but it was part-time and off-and-on.

I was hoping for advice in what I should do next. I have limited funding and transportation.

If you don't have a job right now, then you do need to look for something temporarily. Apply to the jobs that you know you can do and are interested in. Concentrate on the two fields that you received your Bachelor degrees in but, if you can't find anything there, then there is no reason why you can't apply your knowledge and skills to other industries.

Creative Writing and Editing can be applied to many areas. You could even combine the two.

Target some companies that interest you, research their needs, come up with some general ways to apply your knowledge and then set up an appointment with the person in charge and present your ideas to them. Have some business cards made up or create your own. They are easy to do and you can leave the card with each of the people you speak with and maybe even the receptionist.

Post your resume and cover letter in the two sections of the board for free, mostly quality, advice. You should include the part time-on and off-job and the work you did for your previous professor.

I'm trying to follow your post and offer up something useful.  Are you saying that you started school in 1992 and between then and now have never had a permanent job?

Tess

I started college in 1992 and never had anything steady until November 2007, which lasted only a month. The job/volunteer experience I had between 1998 and 2007 had irregular hours, and I did filing, printing out and organizing electronic mail, clipping out newspaper and magazine articles, proofreading manuscripts and articles, managing disks using Word/WordPerfect/WordStar, delivering mail, and pasting on labels on videotapes. The job in November had me help creating a report using attachments in Word and Adobe Acrobat, setting up tables, standardizing font, and adding text. I also helped out a student in writing a research paper, but I forgot his name.
