finding work with a felony convictionThis is a tough one. It does seems as though you pay for the rest of your life. Having the same issues here. My advice is not to give up hope, let your "shortcoming" be your strength. Keep on trying, don't lie on any applications about your convictions, they will find out. Be persistent, be confident. Have no shame, you're only human--they make mistakes. I too have a felony, I have a decent job, but I wish to change professions. It has not been easy getting turned down, just because. Someone mentioned an 'expungement". This is a good avenue to take while still job searching, however, depending upon what State you are in, an "expungement" may not be enough to get your records sealed. Investigate the "expungement", but also look into getting a "pardon". Check with the BCA in your State to get all of your "short fallened history" (sounds better than criminal). Get involved with programs; community; church; volunteering; etc., because you may need character references when you apply for one of these Background Checks Reliefs. I'm in this process myself, so I am speaking to you from experience. I hope for the Best of Opportunity for you. (not good luck) That won't work here!
Not to mention that some employers are going BEYOND felony convictions, and asking if you have ever been arrested before! I mean, that can be anyone walking around! With such a broad question, you could have been arresting for civil protesting, not hardly the same as drug dealing, so do you make that distinction on paper and still be "weeded" out, even though you don't have a criminal record based upon any of the 8 index crimes. To add, just because you are arrested, also does not denote a conviction. Asking about arrests to me, is a red flag that a company is not reasonable and probably treats their employees in an unreasonable manner. Keep your head up! If you are convicted of crime, tell the truth, and move on! Stay on the right track, someone believes in second chances!
One thing you should know for yourself, when trying or attempting to make a change from your past. You need to accept what has happened you, then you forgive yourself, then you don't repeat what you may have been accused of before. This may not seem like an easy task, but it is just as easy as doing wrong and have to suffer consequences. The only thing different about the results is the outcome---positive or negative. | |
