Relocating to new state

My husband and I are currently looking at relocating from Kansas to Tennessee.  I have started to apply for positions in TN but am stressed about how to handle interviews.  I don't have a lot of money to hop on a plane everytime an employer wants to set up an interview.  Are there companies out there that will conduct an initial interview via telephone?  Can anyone give me some advice on relocating???

That will probably depend largely on the type of position and when a person is needed to fill the seat . If the position is more of an entry level, a long distance telephone interview may not be the most efficient way to fill the position because it isn't necessary for multiple interviews and the position generally needs to be filled right away.

Even if it is a higher level type of job, the position may still need to be filled as soon as possible.

If you see a job that you would like to apply to, contact the company (if possible) to determine if a phone interview can be set up. This way you won't be wasting your time applying for something that you won't have a chance at and the employer's time as he/she won't have to read through your information and then contact you only to find out that you live out of state and cannot fly in.

HI Cleveland,

My experience, as well as that of friends, in dealing with companies who are out of state is that they are more than willing to do phone interviews.  In fact, I've never had to ask for it; it's usually what they ask for when they call.

Most realize that at least for an initial interview or two, it makes sense both logistically and financially to do them by phone.  Then, if things progress, it's usually brought to the point of an in-person meeting.  And, depending on the nature of the jobs you're looking at and the industry, the employer may be willing to pay for the trip.

Although I didn't get the impression from your post, unless you're already experiencing trouble arranging interviews, I tend to think this will be your experience.

Good luck.
So would you say that is good to go ahead and show a local address (if available) on your resume when you are applying to jobs in another location?  We have friends where we are planning to relocate that are willing to let me use their addy.
Cleveland,

I suppose you can do whatever you want to do, and maybe give it a try using your friend's address, but if you're asking me, for the reasons I mentioned in my first post, I'd be hesitant to do so.

You might want to first test the waters using your current address.

Here's an article by Monster resume and cover letter expert Kim Isaacs on how to write your documents with relocation in mind, and why not to use someone else's local address.
