Did I Take the Wrong Offer

I was a total burnt-out wreck at my last company, so when a friend submitted my name for an opening at a well-respected global firm, I jumped at the chance.  At the same time I was talking to another company, also global and established.  The positions were quite comparable; both companies were open in their desire to hire me.  One offer came through with an expiration date and the second company couldn't generate an offer in time (the first one would have expired).  Given the truth to the "bird in the hand" theory I withdrew my name from #2, and accepted the offer from company #1.  ANYTHING to get out of the terrible situation I was in!

So here i am a few months later at company 1.  Company #2 called a couple of weeks ago and really wants me to reconsider, since they cannot find anyone with my skills and proven ability.  Company 1 is comprised of great people, who I like, and they all like me, but I am rather bored.  We are in organizational disarry and it's a little frustrating not knowing what I am supposed to be doing.  We all work remotely which doesn't help.  I don't dislike my job, I just don't understand what it is and we are all in the same boat.

I told Company #2 that I was flattered by their request BUT I felt that to leave #1 after only a couple of months would give them a black eye in our close-knit industry (which I don't want to do) and would also put ME on the "watch list".  I would feel badly for the people I left behind - they have apologized to me that things are not going that well.  Mind you this company is one of the largest in the world and you'd know the name immediately, so it's not like they don't have the resources, but it will just take some time.

But I need a reality check - since I cannot do the job I was hired for due to circumstances beyond my control, do I really owe Company #1 anything?  I'm not unhappy, but I wonder how long this will continue and in the back of my mind I worry that if management doesn't sort this all out we could be summarily laid off and the business unit shut down.

Any thoughts?

Debbie,

The only people you owe anything to are yourself and your family!  A corporate firm could care less if you have a car and house payment and would let you go at the drop of a hat to make the stock price go up.

Take the job that you think you would like the most.

John

Debbie, what if the shoe were on the other foot.  your performance stunk. do you think that they would keep you?  would they talk to you first? apply these same concepts as though you were the employer, not the employee. which would you dish out to that employee who is non-productive. warning or termination?
