RADIO/VOICE/ENTERTAINMENT
I've been told OVER & OVER again what a wonderful voice I have. I want to explore radio or voice overs. I know it's competitive but can somebody help on getting started.
The first thing you would need to do is contact your local college and sign up for some communications courses. Perhaps visiting the career center on campus or another center of similar nature in your vicinity to determine exactly which courses you would need to start with. Contact a radio or television station in your area and ask them what it would take to "break into" the business. Often an entry-level receptionist job will give you a foot in the door and the oft-needed "experience within a radio station" qualification. Once you have started your courses, or before, inquire about internships, training or voluntary jobs within the station. Most on-air radio jobs are located in the large cities and metropolises of the country so if you have to relocate, you will need to choose your new city wisely. Also, with most on-air jobs, you will need a minimum of a Bachelors in Communication. But, you can get a part time position in a station while your degree is on-going. My niece, who doesn't do on-air personality type stuff, does do "on the street" commentaries and is a producer of two programs in a very prominent New York City radio station. While she was working on her Bachelors, she worked grave yard shift at a less than prominent but still widely known around Boston station. Her now supervisor was in Boston and heard her report on the plight of the homeless in Boston and offered a job once her degree was completed. That was a year ago and she is quite happy in New York and has received several commentary promotions as well as the chance at producing a more widely listened to program than the ones she is currently.
"Also, with most on-air jobs, you will need a minimum of a Bachelors inCommunication. But, you can get a part time position in a station whileyour degree is on-going." I know a number of people in the business that are personalities and/or do ad voiceovers. None of them has a communications degree. One has no college degree in fact. Radio seems to be one of those areas that your education doesn't have to match the job. If you are smart or have a good voice you can go far. Thank you very much. I would like to give it a try because everyone says " you have a wonderful radio voice". Are any of your friends in Los Angeles or know of anyone that would offer some help? Thank you.
